The e-commerce giant has just announced the end of its file storage service by the end of 2023. Amazon Photos is not affected by this closure.

If you use Amazon Drive to store your documents, now is the time to consider an alternative solution. In an email sent to its customers, Amazon announced the closure of its cloud storage service launched in 2016 in France. Originally, Amazon Drive allowed Amazon customers to enjoy unlimited storage space for free. The firm had however revised its offer downwards a few months later by limiting the storage space offered to 5 GB. The platform will definitely lower the curtain by the end of 2023.

In the missive sent to its customers, the e-commerce giant made it clear that the closure of Amazon Drive would allow it to focus its efforts on Amazon Photos. The online photo and video storage service, a competitor to Google Photos, allows Prime subscribers to store up to 5 GB of videos for free, and an unlimited number of photos.

“As of December 31, 2023, we will no longer support Amazon Drive in order to fully focus our efforts on storing photos and videos with Amazon Photos. We will continue to offer customers the ability to save, share and organize photos and videos with Amazon Photos. said the American giant in the email sent to Amazon Drive users.

Amazon indicates on its FAQ page that the shutdown of the Amazon Drive service will be done in several stages. Starting October 31, 2022, the Amazon Drive iOS and Android mobile app will disappear from the App Store and Google Play Store. As of January 31, 2023, users will no longer be able to store new documents on the service. However, it will be possible to view and download them until December 31, 2023, the last day of operation of the platform.

The e-commerce giant also indicates that the photos and videos stored on Amazon Drive have already been automatically migrated to its Amazon Photos service, which remains in place. For documents stored on Amazon Drive, users are responsible for retrieving those files. They will thus have to download their data to store them locally on a physical storage medium or to transfer them to another storage service before the final closure of the service.
