At the Fuente de Piedra nature reserve in southern Spain, flamingos are ringed annually with the help of enthusiastic volunteer workers. They stand quietly and wait for sunrise before herding the animals into an enclosure, where they are examined and have rings attached to their legs.

– Thanks to this ring marking, we can determine whether the animals are eating in the Camargue, Libya, Morocco or here in Fuente de Piedra, says one of the volunteer workers.
