In step with climate change, algae blooms are increasing in Sweden – now there are warnings of consequences for dogs.
The dog Siri was poisoned and died when she was bathing in what looked like clear water.
– It’s terrible, she was a family member, says dog owner Sofia Wahlgren.
The water can be harmful to humans but deadly to animals. Dogs that bathe and perhaps drink from the water are particularly vulnerable.
There are no reliable statistics on the number of algae-poisoned dogs, but the insurance company Agria annually reimburses about ten treatments for acute suspected cases.
