A Swedish citizen has been arrested in Iran, suspected of espionage, the country’s intelligence ministry said in a statement. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is a case that they have been working on for a long time.
According to the statement from the ministry, the person has had contact with other suspects in Iran and visited Israel, Iran’s arch-enemy, writes the news agency AP.
– During all previous trips, the suspect communicated with several European and non-European persons who were under Iranian surveillance, the statement reads.
The statement does not say when or where the arrest took place. Nor any details about the person. According to the Foreign Ministry, it is about “a known existing case that the Foreign Ministry has been working with for a long time”, they write in a statement to TT.
In recent months, tensions have increased between Iran and Sweden. Among other things, it has been about the arrest and later life sentence in the Stockholm District Court against the Iranian Hamid Noury.
