Sweden was humiliated by England in the EC semi-final.
Afterwards, several players received mean comments via social media.
– There is a limit, says Peter Gerhardsson.
Sweden traveled to the tournament in England with a single goal in mind. Namely, to win the long-awaited championship gold – but the dream was already crushed in the semi-finals, and properly so.
Exposed to hate
Blågult played well in the first half, and had several chances to put the ball in the net. Instead, it was England who went into the half-time break in the lead after Arsenal star Beth Mead broke the deadlock towards the end of the first half.
The Swedish ladies pressed hard in the second half, but to no avail. Instead, England struck, quite easily, three times and Sweden’s defensive play was heavily criticized after the match.
Afterwards, several players received offensive messages on their social media – and now the national team captain Peter Gerhardsson is shouting at all the netizens.
Roaring away now
– People will always have opinions, but then there is a limit to that. We talked about it before the championship. I don’t know how all the players do with their social media, he tells Radiosporten.
– It’s terrible and it just can’t happen to people who are doing their best, says assistant national team captain Magnus Wikman.
One of the players who received the most negative messages was goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl.
– I had some messages about how bad I am. It is part of our role. I don’t always agree that I’m the worst in the whole world. As much as you are not a star, you are not the worst either, she told Expressen after the match.
