On Wednesday, a recreational boat saw something lying in the water between Lurö and Djurö in Vänern and raised the alarm. A rescue operation was launched which resulted in finding two dead people, two kayaks and two paddles.
“Everything was within a radius of about five kilometers,” says Jörgen Hansson.
Notify relatives
Identity documents were found on one of the dead and the police are now working to try to establish the identities of the two adults in order to inform their next of kin.
There are many indications that it is about two foreign tourists, and they were probably out on a longer kayak trip. They were well equipped, wearing life jackets and they brought tents, storm kitchens, fishing gear and provisions.
It is likely that they were caught off guard by bad weather on Tuesday, capsized and then lay in the water until they were found.
Worse weather
During Wednesday the weather was calm, but the day before it was significantly worse.
“Then it was quite windy on Lake Vänern,” says Jörgen Hansson.
It is still unclear how long they were both out. Nor is it known yet where they started their kayak journey.
“They have probably left traces, but we haven’t found them,” says Jörgen Hansson.
There are no suspicions of crime.
