Huge swarms of jellyfish have once again been discovered along Israel’s coast. The jellyfish are scaring away summer bathers from the Mediterranean Sea and causing it with tourism, state the country’s authorities.
“They are causing real damage here,” Guy Lavian, a marine ranger at the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, told Reuters.
Costs millions every year
In addition to causing discomfort to swimmers, the jellyfish cost the country about $10 million a year in lost tourism. Meanwhile, the translucent invertebrates have also clogged desalination plants and industrial fishing nets as their seasonal numbers grow.
– The water is getting warmer and warmer and we can see more and more jellyfish. It can definitely be said that global warming is contributing to these massive swarms.
