Håkan Loob has a Stanley Cup to his credit.
But that may not be why he is most remembered away in North America. Instead, it is the Swede’s mighty goal record from the late 80s.

There is no doubt that Håkan Loob is one of Sweden’s best hockey players of all time. The Swede had several successful seasons away in the NHL, where he had to lift the Stanley Cup with his Calgary Flames in the 1988/89 season.

Loob’s incredible record

The year the Flames were crowned champions, Håkan Loob was one of the team’s absolute best players. The Swede scored 85 points, 27+58, during the regular season and stopped at 19 points when the final whistle sounded in the last final game.

But that may not be where Håkan Loob is most remembered among NHL fans. The Swede, as almost everyone knows, holds the Swedish goal record in one and the same season during the regular season.

The former right winger achieved the feat the previous season, in 1987/88, when he drilled the puck into the back of the net an incredible 50 times.

Withstood for 34 years

Despite Swedish superstars in the NHL such as Peter Forsberg, Mats Sundin, the Sedin brothers, Daniel Alfredsson and Henrik Zetterberg, Loob is the only Swede to score 50 or more goals. And it’s something that makes NHL fans wonder.

In a thread on Reddit where the most notable records in the NHL are discussed, it is Håkan Loob’s goal record that received the most reactions:

“For me, it is that despite all the good and great Swedes who have played in the NHL, only one player (Håkan Loob) has managed to score 50 or more goals in one season,” writes one user.

The record has stood for over 34 years, and even though Håkan Loob was an absolutely fantastic hockey player, it is actually remarkable that it still stands today.
