He is one of IFK Gothenburg’s best players of all time.
Now Torbjörn Nilsson talks about the club’s moves that attracted him to the blue and white.
– Then there was no doubt about it, says Nilsson.
IFK Gothenburg’s team in the early 80s is one of the best Swedish teams of all time. The club from the west coast was completely dominant in Sweden with three straight league titles, and took all of Europe by storm.
Three stays in IFK Gothenburg
Blåvitt won the Uefa Cup in 1982 after beating Germany’s Hamburg with a total of 4–0 over two matches. Players such as Glenn Hysén, Dan Corneliusson and Conny Karlsson, as well as Sven-Göran “Svennis” Eriksson on the bench, received their proper acknowledgments and left shortly after the final win for games abroad.
IFK Gothenburg’s perhaps very best player, Torbjörn Nilsson, he left with. However, he would return to Blåvitt later in his career for a third stay, and now the icon tells about how it happened when he was recruited to the club for the first time, in 1974.
– In the end, I know that Anders Bernmar (then vice chairman) kept at it and manipulated me for three months before I chose IFK, says Nilsson to Göteborgs-Posten.
That attracted Nilsson
He continues:
– He (Bernmar) had me around his finger. I was up and drinking tea very often with him and his wife Annika.
In the end, Anders Bernmar said what would be decisive for Torbjörn Nilsson to sign on for IFK Göteborg.
– It was that Anders said “we will sign Ove Kindvall and Björn Nordqvist”, they were IFK Norrköping legends that I had as idols. So then there was nothing to hesitate about, says Torbjörn Nilsson.
And so it became. The year after Torbjörn Nilsson, the two IFK Norrköping legends arrived in Gothenburg.
