the Sun has deleterious effects on the eyes: in the short term, it causes painful superficial burns and in the long term, it promotes cataracts and can cause irreversible damage to the macula. This is why it is important to choose a pair sufficiently protective. For this, the first reflex is to check that the frame has a CE marking, which certifies that the glasses meet European standards. Be careful, because this logo is easily falsifiable, especially on counterfeit glasses from major brands found on the markets.

Sunglasses: which lens tint to choose?

Warning: the indices from 0 to 4 indicated on the glasses only indicate the degree of tint of the lens in order to prevent glare, but in no way guarantee the filtration of UVA or UVB rays harmful to the eyes. Only the statements “100% UV “, “UV400” or “E-SPF 50” ensure effective filtration of UV rays. A tint that looks very dark is therefore not necessarily a guarantee of protection. This can even have a counter-productive effect because, behind glasses dark, the pupil dilates to let in more lightwhich means that more UV will reach the eye in depth.

  • Gray lenses are recommended for farsighted people and offer the best color reproduction.
  • Brown lenses are recommended for myopic people. They accentuate the contrasts and are preferred for sportswinter.
  • Yellow glasses or color orange amplify the contrasts and reliefs. They are suitable for situations with low brightnessfor example for night driving.
  • Green-colored lenses improve color perception and help limit fatigue ocular. They are recommended for golf or tennis for example.
  • Blue or pink lenses are purely aesthetic and of no real interest.

Sunglasses: which shape to choose?

Glasses should be large enough to prevent sunlight from entering from the sides or bottom (eg. reverberation on the ground or water for example). For the sports practice (boating, mountaineering…), there are specially designed wrap-around glasses.
