In Côte d’Ivoire, Michel Gbagbo, MP for Yopougon, wrote an open letter to Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara on Thursday 21 July. He calls on the Head of State to release the last prisoners of the post-electoral crisis of 2010-2011.
Michel Gbagbo, son of the former Ivorian president, Laurent Gbagbo, launched this appeal to the current president Alassane Ouattara in a context of reconciliation, and this, two weeks before the national holiday, on August 7th. Joined by RFI, he explains his approach. ” This is a letter to draw the Head of State’s attention to the fate of these Ivorians who have languished in our prisons since the post-election crisis of 2010. If the principal, President Laurent Gbagbo , was acquitted of all charges, there is no reason for the military who defended the state to remain in prison. It is therefore ultimately a letter to invite everyone to join the dynamics of peace, in the dynamics of reconciliation, in order to settle the accounts of the past, somewhere. Some will be able to brandish the principle of the independence of justice. They are right to do so, but the prerogatives that the Head of State can use are constitutional prerogatives. »
