Probably the most popular monsters in Pokémon GO are shinys. But when it comes to our MeinMMO author Franzi Korittke, not all of them can be seen. What you don’t like about the Shinys, she explains to you in this article.
What Pokemon is it about? In Pokémon GO you not only have the opportunity to catch the various monsters in their normal form, but some also have a so-called shiny version. This differs visually from the actual form and is very popular with many players.
And I, too, am immediately enthusiastic when it comes to the topic of shinys. Because I want one thing above all: a full Shiny-Dex. But most of the dazzling specimens also fascinate me visually. Some, such as Charizard or Nachtara, look much nicer in this form.
But some shinys don’t meet my taste at all and in my opinion they look much better in their normal shape. I have summarized 8 monsters whose dazzling form I find the ugliest below and explain what bothers me about them.
I only considered the Pokémon that can already be caught in the game as Shiny. The order of the ranking corresponds to my personal sympathy for the respective Shiny and starts with the one I find the ugliest.
1. Dragonite
What is this Pokemon? Dragoran is the last evolution of Dratini. The Pokémon comes from the 1st generation of games and belongs to the Dragon and Flying types. Its dazzling variant can currently only be obtained by evolving Dratini through Dragonair.
What bothers me about the Shiny? The Shiny form of Dragoran is one of the Pokémon in the game that I just hate making shiny. If you look at the dazzling variants of his preliminary developments, then they shine in a strong purple. And with this they make a good deal.
It would definitely be the same with Dragoran. But none. The dazzling dragon and flying Pokémon suddenly turns green while evolving, so it no longer goes with Dratini and Dragonair at all. And also compared to its normal variant, the Shiny in this color, in my opinion, doesn’t look good at all.
2. Mamuttel
What is this Pokemon? Mamutel is the latest development of Quiekel. It is from the 4th generation of games and belongs to the Ice and Ground types. As a Shiny, you can only get it if you develop an iridescent squeak.
What bothers me about the Shiny? Mamutel and the entire Quiekel family also fell victim to a terrible shade of green when designing the Shiny. While Quiekel still shines in, let’s say, an acceptable, subtle green, it gets worse with every development.
Mamutel’s body is simply covered with a dirty green layer of fur, which is more reminiscent of mold and doesn’t go with such a graceful creature at all. The rich shade of brown that his normal form is looks a thousand times handsomer if I have my way.
3. Lavados
What is this Pokemon? Lavados is a legendary Pokémon from the first generation of games and belongs to the Fire and Flying types. It has no prior or further developments. You can meet the Pokémon from time to time in the level 5 raids.
What bothers me about the Shiny? The legendary Pokémon is said to come primarily as a graceful fire bird. This is also optimally reproduced in the coloring of the normal form.
And even if the designers used similar color schemes here and tried to clearly differentiate the shiny Pokémon from the normal form, I like the original by far better.
That’s because they colored the legendary monster’s body reddish. As a result, it no longer looks graceful at all, but is more reminiscent of a plucked chicken trying to fly with the last few feathers it has left.
By the way: In addition to the Kanto form, Lavados also has a Galar form, which looks worlds better and I personally like the best of all the variants. This was also recently found in the Pokémon GO game code, which gives the trainers hope for a release.
4. Psiana
What is this Pokemon? Psiana is one of a total of 8 evolutions of Eevee. The Pokémon comes from the 2nd generation of games and belongs to the Psycho type. You can only get its Shiny variant by catching a Shiny Eevee and evolving it into Psiana.
What bothers me about the Shiny? The normal form of Psiana can be recognized by a light lilac body. From my point of view, this color fits perfectly with his cat-like, graceful body. And also in relation to his psycho type, this color choice works well.
So it’s also surprising when you have a neon green Psiana in front of you after evolving a Shiny Eevee. This no longer seems consistent with the rest of the exterior and rather arouses in me the warning “Caution poisonous! Do not touch!”.
And also compared to the other evolutions of Eevee, I can’t understand how this color could be chosen for the design. After all, the other Shinys look much more coherent and, like Nachtara or Feelinara, also look good. So even with Psiana, I’m definitely sticking with the original.

5. Palimpalim
What is this Pokemon? And the Psycho-Pokémon Palimpalim also joins my list of the ugliest shiny Pokemon. The 3rd generation monster is the evolution of Klingplim, but can also be found in the wild in its iridescent form.
What bothers me about the Shiny? In the case of Palimpalim, too, the designers have once again resorted to the green and yellow paint pot. While the normal form shines in a beautiful light blue and the red decorations underline its special appearance, the Shiny just looks sad.
His body has simply been changed to a bright green on the Shiny and the red highlight has been replaced with a pale yellow. If you compare both variants, then the dazzling form is completely lost. For this reason, the normal form is my personal favorite here as well.
6. Shardrago
What is this Pokemon? The dragon Pokémon Shardrago comes from the 5th game generation and has no advance or further developments. You have the opportunity to get it in its dazzling form every now and then in the level 3 raids.
What bothers me about the Shiny? Shardrago looks very appropriate in his normal form. His body shines in a beautiful strong shade of blue and the red head and the red horns on his back complete this picture. In its iridescent form, however, Shardrago is green—grass green!
The color is also very strong, but from my point of view it is already so dominant that its now yellow head doesn’t really come into its own anymore. Maybe it would have been better if Nintendo had also left the head of the shiny version in a rich red.
I definitely like the normal variant of Shardrago far better, although unlike most of the other monsters on this list, the shiny form is at least respectable.
7. Practice bar
What is this Pokemon? The fighting Pokémon Praktibalk comes from the 5th game generation and can be further developed via Strepoli to Meistagrif. You can occasionally get the monster in level 1 raids.
What bothers me about the Shiny? Also with this Pokémon, I just don’t find the color choice of its Shiny particularly suitable. While the normal Praktibalk comes with a beautiful brownish rodent-like body, you have the feeling that the Shiny was simply turned on the color slider in the image editing program.
The dazzling specimen just looks garish and not beautiful at all. It’s getting a little bit better bit by bit with his two developments and Meistagrif can be passed as a solid Shiny, but the normal forms of this series of developments still make a lot more of a difference in my opinion.
8. Letarking
What is this Pokemon? The normal Pokémon Letarking comes from the 3rd game generation and is the latest development of Bummelz. You can also only get its dazzling variant by evolving it.
What bothers me about the Shiny? Unlike most of the other Pokemon on this list, Letarking probably triggers me the least. Similar to Dragonan, I am disappointed with the implementation of this development series. If you look at Shiny-Bummelz, then it shines in a beautiful and cute pink.
It stands out clearly from its normal brownish form. But the designers obviously threw this concept overboard with Muntier and opted for a delicate cream tone that differs only minimally from the original.
And also at Letarking, only the white collar was adjusted and recolored to a subtle light brown. While a pink body might not have suited this gorilla-like Pokemon, I think there could have been a clearer color difference here.
Shinys that hardly differ from the original
The list of shinys that I don’t like is far from over. However, there is one group of shiny Pokemon that I would like to give special mention to: the stealthy ones. These are not ugly per se, but simply poorly implemented because they practically do not differ from their normal form.
That is, the differences are so minimal that the changes can hardly be recognized. I think that’s a shame because, in my opinion, Shiny’s primarily have the function of being shown. Be it in an arena or in battle, you want to share the joy of your new Shiny with other players and, yes, I admit it, you want to show off with it.
Of course, monsters that you don’t see at first glance are doing badly. From my point of view, these include the following Shinys:
But even with some starter Pokémon such as Bulbasaur, Squirtle and Charmander as well as Pikachu, the color differences are hardly noticeable.
My conclusion to the Shinys
Even if I don’t like the Shinys mentioned above at all and for this reason I won’t show them off in arenas or in battle, I’m still happy to meet them.
That’s not stopping me from welcoming them to my Poké Bag. That’s why I will continue to hunt for Shiny diligently in order to get closer to my goal of a full Shiny-PokéDex.
