Electricity restoration continues in Wheatley

Work remains paused in Wheatley

While officials await the installation of a conductor pipe before continuing remediation, work is ongoing to restore electricity to various buildings around the reduced evacuation zone.

Entegrus officials estimate that within two to three weeks the service will be restored to the four properties on Talbot Street East whose services had to be relocated due to the emergency.

Installation of the conductor pipe is the first step of a redundant pressure relief well in the municipal parking lot, located near the area of potential environmental concern, before proceeding with further remediation.

Investigative work has taken place since the July 6 gas release, which occurred while workers were in the process of excavating in preparation for driving a larger conductor pipe over the existing well.

There has been no gas emission since that time.

A thorough review of the gas monitoring system and health and safety plans was conducted. Officials added that at no time was there a risk to the community beyond the evacuation zone.

When work resumes, a gas odor may be detected. If residents at any time detect the smell of gas, they are asked to call 911.
