Before the game
Sweden has had a passable EC play-off so far, where they seem to have started to get going after a weak start. They cruised against the reigning champions Holland, and beat Switzerland, but the play in these two games was far from convincing and they had a lot of luck on their side. In the third and final group stage match, however, the attacking game clicked perfectly and they beat Portugal with a whopping 5-0.
Here, Sweden is pitted against Belgium, who narrowly advanced from the group stage. There was a draw against Iceland, a loss against France and an odd-goal victory against Italy. Second-ranked Sweden are clear favorites against Belgium, which is ranked as the world’s 20th best national team by FIFA. Before the quarter-finals, Sweden had two covid cases in the squad, where the players who tested positive are Hanna Glas and Emma Kullberg. Glas and Kullberg have been isolated from the rest of the squad, and we have to keep our fingers crossed that we don’t suffer more cases before or after the match.
