Haldimand declares ‘significant weather event’

A winter storm warning is in place for much of southwestern Ontario including Norfolk, Haldimand, Brant and Oxford counties.

Environment Canada issued the warning late Sunday night. The storm warning replaces the snowfall warning that was issued earlier on Sunday.
The national weather agency says snowfall accumulation from Sunday to Monday evening could be in the range of 25-35 cm in Norfolk, Brant and Oxford. In Haldimand, snowfall may reach as high as 50 cm.
Snow will be heavy at times with peak snowfall of 3-5 cm per hour on Monday morning, said Environment Canada.
Wind gusts of up to 60 km/h will result in blowing snow that is also possible Monday afternoon and evening.
“Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow,” said Environment Canada.
Haldimand County declared a ‘significant weather event’ to take effect at 12 am on Monday.
“ During a significant weather event, residents are advised to use extra caution and are reminded that standard timelines for clearing roads and sidewalks may not be met,” said the release.
“The county’s winter control crews are prepared and ready to respond to this winter storm event, however, with the expected snowfall accumulation, residents are asked to be patient and allow staff time to clear main arterial roadways by priority.”
About 1,500 km of roads and streets need to be cleared, said the release.
Haldimand County said trash collection on Monday, January 17 is canceled due to the storm. Waste will be collected on Jan. 24.
