Microsoft is testing a command palette in Edge to launch quick actions

The latest version of Edge Canary, reserved for developers, includes a new feature allowing you to activate a palette of commands to quickly execute certain actions.

Microsoft has just started testing a new feature with users of the Canary version of its Edge web browser. Command Palette, that’s its name, allows you to display a field in which you just have to enter a keyword to access a list of quick actions that can be executed.

However, this feature differs from the quick actions offered in Firefox and Google Chrome since it does not run in the browser’s address bar. Instead, Edge displays a sort of launcher over the browser, similar to a search engine and which is very similar to the Run function integrated into PowerToys, and which is activated using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + Space.

Once this launcher is displayed on the screen, all you have to do is enter the first letters of a keyword to access a list of actions that can be performed. You can use it to access all of the browser’s features and settings (private browsing, deletion of browsing history), or to access certain online tools, including the Web Apps of the Office office suite. Developers can quickly access the tools that concern them by directly typing the > sign in the search field.

An experimental function to activate manually

If you’re using the latest version of Edge Canary, you won’t be able to access this command palette directly. Microsoft has chosen to test it within the experimental functions of the browser. You must therefore activate it manually in order to benefit from it.

To do this, go to edge://flags/#edge-devtools-command-paletteclick the drop-down menu Default and change the value to Enabled. Then click on To restart to relaunch Edge for the changes to take effect.

You can then start using the command palette by bringing it up using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + Space. Then enter a few letters in the search field displayed on the screen to see the list of available commands.
