The oldest men’s ME result in athletics was created with a surprising ghost throw – Next night we are planning the puck competition of all time

36 years ago, the small town of Neubrandenburg, located in the northeastern corner of Germany, offered ideal conditions for the throw, which still stands tall in the list of world records in athletics. East German Jürgen Schultthen 26, was known as a creator whose basic level was 67 meters.

On Friday, June 6, 1986, everything fell into place and the wind started picking up in the middle of the discus competition. In the fourth round, Schult hit his cue ball 74 meters and 8 centimeters from the front edge of the ring.

The result exceeded the previous ME by more than two meters and is the oldest valid world record in athletics for men.

– If I had known how to throw 74 meters again, I would have done it again, Schult has grumbled since then.

In addition to the ME throw, the man broke the 70-meter mark only once in his career, in 1988.

2000 Olympic bronze medalist Franz Kruger sums up Schult’s throw like this:

– He was in the right place at the right time and in top condition, commented Kruger, who has settled in Finland.

The man who represented South Africa in his prime knows how difficult it is to exceed 70 meters, let alone threaten Schult’s result. Kruger’s best arc is 70.32 thrown in 2002, which is still the African record. Five years later, he smashed the current SE result of 69.97 in Helsingborg, Sweden.

– At that time, really good conditions prevailed in the SE race. Their importance cannot be underestimated. The conditions directly affect the lengths of the throws as well as the thrower’s helmet.

Schult’s ME arc soared really high and descended farther than anyone could have imagined. The women’s ME is also made in Neubrandenburg. Gabriele Reinsch threw a cheeky 76.80 two years after Schult.

Three-time Finnish champion Pury Niskala estimates that the effect of a favorable wind can be as much as three meters compared to the base. However, mere talker does not explain Schult’s rant.

– It was a real ghost throw. Everyone was also natzing for the rhythm. What was special was that Schult threw the ME with the leg change technique, and not against the support, so to speak. He only used the ME throw technique for a short time in his career, Niskala describes.

Since then, all 70m throwers have been faced with the same question: would I be able to break Schult’s ME?

A Lithuanian has come closest Virgilius Aleknawho threw a score of 73.88 in 2000 in Kaunas in his home country.

– I believe that ME will be violated again. However, it doesn’t happen in a stadium, but in an open field. You can’t break the ME without top conditions, Kruger says.

One possible place could be at the birthplace of the SE throw in Helsingborg, where the winds blow the arc far. Estonian Gerd Kanter in 2006, whipped his flag there to 73.38.

Hayward Field, the WC arena in Eugene, is a more open competition stadium than usual. Swedish Olympic champion Daniel Ståhl praised the conditions as excellent after qualifying. Kruger also touts the stadium and pitch in Eugene as one of the best in the world.

For right-handers, a crosswind from the right is best. Left-handers, on the other hand, enjoy the side opponent coming from the left. Both of these were seen in the Oregon qualifier.

However, Kruger and Niskala do not believe that Schult’s ME would be in danger early Wednesday Finnish time. The speaker is hardly strong enough to make a 74 meter arc possible.

– History has shown that a person can at best throw a 70-meter throw without the help of the wind. Currently, there are an exceptionally large number of such throwers, i.e. 3–4, Kruger estimates.

Niskala thinks Ståhl and Slovenian Kristjan Ceh may for their characteristics upset the ME readings, but this is unlikely to happen now in Oregon.

– This could turn out to be the biggest puck contest of all time. The World Cup record will probably be broken, Niskala says.

The competition record is Alekna’s 70.17 from 2005 in Helsinki. Two throwers have never crossed the 70-meter mark in the same title race, but Oregon is close to that trick. In addition to Ståhl and Ceh, at least the son of the said hockey legend is hunting the ghost border Mykolas Aleknawhich has come rushing to the top of the world.

– I hope for Ståhl’s victory, but my number one favorite is Ceh, whose technique is very pleasing to the eye. Ceh throws widely and the tightening of the middle body is on point. Alekna, Niskala completes the sum of the three shops.

– My guess is that Ceh and Alekna will decide the gold. In the bronze battle Simon Pettersson can even beat Ståhl, who has been a bit uneven this season, Kruger nods.
