Ethiopian Gotytom Gebreslase is the new marathon world champion. The athlete, who won the prestigious Berlin Marathon less than a year ago, won on Monday July 18 in Eugene (Oregon) in 2 hours 18 minutes and 11 seconds, a new World Championship record. Kenyan Jeptut Korir took the silver medal (2 hours 18 minutes and 20 seconds), while naturalized Kenyan Israeli Lonah Chemtai Salpeter finished in bronze (2 hours 20 minutes and 18 seconds). Kenyan Ruth Chepngetich, world champion in 2019 in Doha, Qatar, had to give up before the halfway mark, victim of intestinal problems. Ethiopia achieves a double in these 2022 Worlds after the victory of Tamirat Tola on the men’s side on Sunday.
