Southern Europe is plagued by extreme heat with temperatures above 45 degrees. The dry and hot weather has also caused hundreds of land and forest fires in Spain, Portugal and France.

The heat has had devastating consequences in Portugal, where more than 2,000 firefighters are fighting hundreds of fires raging in the central and northern parts of the country. On Sunday, there were also reports that 659 people had died in the past week.
