At the press conference held after the government session, Kovachevski stated that they decided to approve the French proposal dated June 30, 2022 and said, “With this decision, we are starting the membership negotiation process of North Macedonia with the EU. With this session of the government, we complete another historic step for our country.” used the phrases.
‘ONE STEP LEFT’
Stating that the process will result in the realization of the goal of becoming a full member of the EU, Kovachevski said, “Today, we have a negotiation framework in which the Macedonian language and identity are preserved and remain outside of historical issues. It is one step away from holding the first intergovernmental session, which marks the beginning of negotiations with the EU.” he said.
Announcing that the first intergovernmental session will be held in Brussels on July 19, Dimitar Kovachevski said, “After that, Europe will be in Skopje and the Republic of North Macedonia will be in Brussels.” said.
68 YES VOTES
The 120-seat North Macedonian Assembly approved the proposal with 68 yes votes in the session it held during the day. No or abstaining votes were cast in the vote, and the opposition party Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization-Macedonian National Democratic Union (VMRO-DPMNE) deputies left the parliament at the time of the vote.
During the session, a group in front of the parliament building protested the proposal within the scope of the actions held for about 2 weeks.
French President Emmanuel Macron presented a proposal to resolve the problems between Bulgaria and North Macedonia within the framework of the EU negotiation, and France’s proposal turned into a European proposal after it was approved by all EU member states. This proposal foresees the lifting of Bulgaria’s two-year veto on North Macedonia’s EU membership.
