The Finnish man’s case received a lot of media attention both at home and in Uganda. The businessman had traveled to Uganda together with the former Minister of Communications Suvi Lindén (Kok.).
A court in Uganda’s capital, Kampala, has sentenced a Ugandan woman to 30 years in prison for the murder of a Finnish businessman.
A Finnish man was found dead in a room at the luxury hotel Pearl of Africa in February 2018. He had traveled to Uganda together with the former Minister of Communications Summer Lindénin (coc.) with.
Lindén has said in public that he was on a trip to promote issues related to the information society. In Uganda, Lindén told a local reporter that he had come to the country to explore business opportunities.
It later turned out that, among other things, cocaine and pesticides had been found in the dead businessman’s body.
There was no direct evidence of murder
The sentencing judge By Margaret Mutony according to that, there was no direct evidence that the accused woman had murdered the Finnish businessman.
– However, the details of the case strongly link the accused to the murder, he said according to the New Vision newspaper.
Mutonyi also justified the harsh sentence by saying that Uganda’s reputation must be protected in the minds of foreign tourists and investors.
Two other suspects in the murder did not receive sentences.
There were many ambiguities surrounding the case
There were and still are many uncertainties surrounding the death of the Finnish businessman.
It was intertwined with the president of Uganda Yoweri Musevenito the power struggle between the country’s police and the security service ISO.
The Finnish businessman was invited to the country by the director of ISO Frank Bagyenda Kakan by signing an invitation letter, which, however, according to the court, turned out to be a fake.
According to Judge Mutonyi, the woman now convicted of murder was involved in forging the invitation letter, with the intention of luring the Finnish businessman to Uganda to be robbed.
However, one of the murder suspects, who was not sentenced by the court, had connections to ISO.
