Digimon Battle Online is an MMORPG originally released in Korea in 2002. There it still bears the name Digimon RPG. The game came to the West in 2010, but was shut down again after a few years. Now, almost ten years later, there is a second attempt. Is it worth it?
What kind of game is this? The MMORPG is strongly based on the third season of Digimon Tamers. You have the choice of one of four characters: Takato, Rika, Henry or Jen. With this you can then explore the Digiwelt and catch Digimon and fight with them.
How is the game? Digimon RPG was released in 2010 – more than 8 years after the release in Korea – in our west. However, the title lasted only three years. In 2013, WeMade shut down the servers.
In 2022, however, the MMORPG returns. This time it’s being brought to the west by publisher GAMEKING, who already runs Digimon Masters Online with us, and will also bear the original name Digimon RPG in the future. You can already pre-register on the website and secure some pre-order bonuses (via Gameking).
This video by YouTuber VihKun offers you a deep insight into the game:
Criticism for limited combat system and catch quotas
What is changing compared to before? It’s hard to say because GAMEKING hasn’t shared many details about Digimon RPG yet. However, the game in Korea is still getting updates today that, among other things, bring new opponents into play.
Above all, the topic of monetization is open. The MMORPG will get Free2Play and a shop. It is currently not possible to say exactly what is in there. However, their other title, Digimon Masters Online, has come under criticism when it comes to Pay2Win.
Is the game worth it? If you’re a huge Tamers fan, then maybe. After all, you play with the well-known characters and Digimon from this season. But overall, I don’t remember Digimon Battle Online that well.
The fights in particular were a disappointment. For a fight you had to click on an enemy Digimon. However, if you wanted to, you could bypass all of the combat, which kind of kills the appeal of a dangerous world.
In addition, the Digimon had few abilities. The first attack felt like a kind of tackle for all monsters, attacks two and three were special, but tactically it wasn’t as demanding as other Digimon titles.
Who is speaking here? Alex is the MMORPG expert on MeinMMO. He spent many hundreds of hours mainly in Guild Wars, Guild Wars 2, ESO, New World and Black Desert. In addition, he gambles on almost every MMORPG that is newly released. The world of Digimon has fascinated him since childhood, so he has tried all Digimon MMORPGs. He spent about 20 hours on Digimon Battle Online.
I also have bad memories of catch quotas. I usually had to fight the same Digimon 15-20 times to get it. That didn’t necessarily make the game feel any better.
However, there is a possibility that over the years the game has changed for the better, at least in some criticisms. So if you are interested in a Digimon MMORPG, you should give the game a chance.
On the other hand, if you are looking for a modern single-player Digimon, you should take a look at Survive. Here’s the trailer for it:
By the way, a new MMORPG is currently being developed for Digimon. It is called Super Rumble and has already shown first gameplay. It is based on the first season and also looks really good. You can find everything about it here:
