The suits keep David in the dark about their true motives. Gradually he finds out that he Part of a larger plan is that the chairman of the so-called planning office came up with. Apparently he knows all about David and the role he has to play in world history.

    Attention, follow spoiler!

The plan ends with an exciting key scene over the rooftops of New York. However, this one was added later, because director and screenwriter George Nolfi had actually intended a different ending for the story. In the original version, the chairman was to be revealed in the finale.

As it would have turned out, the chairman was the whole time a chairperson (in the original, the character is only shown as a “the chairman” designated). Iranian actress Shohreh Aghdashloo was cast for the role. However, the crucial scene didn’t make it into the finished film.

This revelation would have changed the ending quite a bit, as the Chair would have grabbed everyone’s attention. In the current version the focus remains on David and Elise. The free will of the two was put to the test by the planning office. The fact that there is no larger-than-life figure in a deus ex machina moment at the end emphasizes the freedom they have gained for themselves. Podcast: The 20 best series starts in July 2022
