A court in Argentina sentenced 19 former officers to long prison terms for crimes against humanity during the 1976-1983 military dictatorship.

Among the crimes against humanity are disappearances, murders, torture and kidnapping of children.

Among those sentenced is General Santiago Riveros, who has been previously convicted of human rights violations. Riveros was convicted on more than 100 counts and sentenced to life in prison.

A federal court in the capital, Buenos Aires, ruled that crimes were committed against up to 350 victims.

Among these victims are six Mercedes Benz factory workers who were kidnapped by right-wing death squads for being union members.

After the workers were abducted, they were tortured in the Campo de Mayo detention center under General Riveros.

Although they are officially still missing, they are believed to have been killed after they were abducted.

After the military junta led by General Jorge Videla came to power on March 24, 1976, it embarked on a campaign of extermination against left-wing dissidents.

During the so-called “Dirty War”, 30 thousand people were killed or disappeared.
