A torrential downpour caused huge bodies of water to sweep Hindu pilgrims on their way up to a cave in the Himalayas, in the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir.
At least 16 people have been found dead, but more than 40 people have been reported missing. Rescue work is still ongoing and the number of both dead and missing is feared to rise.
Around 10,000 people camped near the popular but remote pilgrimage site of the Amarnath Temple high in the mountains. Hundreds of tents were swept away by the water masses and many people have been injured and are now being cared for in field hospitals set up by the military in the mountains.
The pilgrims make a pilgrimage to an ice pillar in the cave, which they believe is an incarnation of the Hindu god Shiva. Normally, this is one of the biggest religious festivals in Kashmir, but this year the celebration is limited by major security events.
