On Thursday, the permanent observer of the Holy See to the UN officially submitted to the General Secretariat the application for membership of the paris agreements. The Vatican should become, within 2 months, the 198th state on the planet to join these agreements.

Through this commitment, the Holy See “ intends to contribute and give its moral support to the efforts of all States to cooperate (…) in an effective and adequate response to the challenges that climate change poses to our humanity and to our common home “Said a statement from the Vatican.

The smallest state in the world does not emit greenhouse gases, but its ecological commitment has redoubled in recent years under the leadership of Pope Francis and his encyclical Laudato Si’published a few months before the COP21.

Many meetings on the protection of the planet have been organized on his initiative, as before the Glasgow conference last year, and his diplomatic activism has played a major role in recent years, particularly with the countries of Latin America where Ladato Si’ has been read a lot.

Climate change is an impact on the environment but ” especially affect the lives of the poorest and most vulnerable people ”recalls the Vatican again in its press release.
