Thursday July 7, at the end of the afternoon, the Grenoble police received a report concerning two men on a scooter, one of which, the passenger, was indicated to be equipped with a long weapon. Around 6 p.m., two police officers on foot intervened in the Hoche district, in the city center of Grenoble. When they arrived, the armed man took aim at the police. It was then that a police officer opened fire, hitting the driver of the motorcycle who lost control of the vehicle. The man died on the spot despite the rapid intervention of emergency services. The armed individual fled. According to the public prosecutor’s press release, a “loaded Kalashnikov type weapon was found on the scene”.
The police officer who fired was immediately taken into custody, but his custody would have been lifted overnight, according to the Dauphine. According to information from AFP, the shot dead man, aged 24, was known to the police for an armed robbery which had earned him a sentence of two and a half years in prison. A psychological unit has been set up by the City of Grenoble for his relatives. The man who accompanied him is still wanted. The judicial police have opened an investigation for “attempted murder of a person holding public authority”. According to a police source, it would be “acts of common law, not at all terrorism“. The IGPN was entrusted with the investigation for “fatal blows” targeting the police officer who shot the young man.
