These 20 series highlights will start this year

After we have already chosen the 20 best series from the first half of 2022, we are now looking forward to the highlights of the next six months with great anticipation. In addition to the highly anticipated Lord of the Rings series and the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, there is in the streaming offer from Netflix, Amazon, Disney+ and Co. much more to discover.

We have a selection for you 20 promising series highlights put together that are scheduled to start this year and that series fans should definitely make a note of. We left out future series that were already running in the USA and have not yet been published in Germany, such as Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Peacemaker, or the western hit 1883.

Series Highlights 2022: 1899 on Netflix

What the new project of the dark duo Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar is really about is (still) a big secret. The action follows the people on board an emigrant ship sailing from Europe to New York. A mysterious second ship, which is supposed to bring an unexpected twist, already makes us wonder what Friese and Odar have come up with this time after their extremely complex time warp epic.

Series highlights 2022: Star Wars – Andor at Disney +

The rebel spy Cassian Andor is at the center of the new Star Wars series, which sheds light on his backstory around 5 years before the events of Rogue One. In addition to Diego Luna as Cassian Andor, the cast also includes stars such as Stellan Skarsgård and Fiona Shaw. There is also a reunion with Senator Mon Mothma, played again by Genevieve O’Reilly. The first season consists of 12 episodes. A second and final season has already been ordered. This horror anthology brings us eight different scary stories from influential horror directors, all hand-picked by producer Guillermo del Toro: Jennifer Kent (Babadook), David Prior (The Empty Man), Keith Thomas (The Vigil), Panos Cosmatos (Mandy), Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight), Vincenzo Natali (Cube), Ana Lily Amirpour (A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night) and Guillermo Navarro (del Toro’s most trusted cinematographer). The cast includes Andrew Lincoln, Ben Barnes and Rupert Grint.

Series Highlights 2022: The Lord of the Rings – The Rings of Power at Amazon

No series is as eagerly awaited this year as Return to Middle-earth. Amazon’s outrageously expensive Lord of the Rings prequel promises an epic story set in the Second Age and plenty of adventure with humans, elves, dwarves, orcs, harfeet and many other Middle-earth beings. And as the title already promises, a certain Sauron will certainly have a hand in it.

Series highlights 2022: goosebumps at midnight on Netflix

After Haunted Hill House, Haunted Bly Manor and Midnight Mass, the next series by horror master Mike Flanagan awaits us this year. Based on the Young Adult novels by Christopher Pike, Goosebumps at Midnight, or The Midnight Club, follows a group of terminally ill youth living in a hospice who share spooky stories at midnight. When one of them dies, strange things start to happen.

Series highlights 2022: House of the Dragon on HBO and Sky

The prelude to one of the greatest fantasy series of our time delves deep into the history of the Targaryen family, who rule Westeros hundreds of years before the events of Game of Thrones. The series is based on several short stories by George RR Martins and his book Fire and Blood. This summer we will find out whether House of the Dragon can convince with its huge character ensemble, brutal intrigues and lots of dragons or whether it will be crushed by the burden of the controversial Game of Thrones finale. Interview With the Vampire, like Interview with a Vampire starring Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise, is based on Anne Rice’s chronicle of the Vampire novel cycle. Once again, the focus is on the tragic story of Louis de Pointe du Lac (Jacob Anderson), who meets the vampire Lestat de Lioncourt (Sam Reid) in New Orleans in the early 20th century and becomes a bloodsucker himself. The series is intended to be the starting signal for an entire series universe that is based on Rice’s novel series Chronicles of the Vampires and The Mayfair Witches.
Series highlights 2022: Jigsaw on Netflix

Has Netflix found its next Money Heist (that isn’t a horrible remake) yet? Based on a true story, the Heist series stars Breaking Bad villain Giancarlo Esposito. As Leo Rap, he leads a gang of thieves intent on performing (how else) the greatest heist in history during a hurricane. Securities worth $70 billion are said to be stolen. The series is said to feature a non-linear narrative spanning a period of 24 years.

Series Highlights 2022: Love and Death on HBO Max

Scarlet Witch fans can look forward to a series reunion with Elizabeth Olsen in the HBO Max production Love and Death, written by David E. Kelley. In it she plays Candy Montgomery, a notorious murderer who killed her friend Betty Gore with an ax in 1980. In addition to Olsen, the star-studded mini-series also includes Jesse Plemons, Lily Rabe, Elizabeth Marvel and Krysten Ritter created for Netflix. In it, Evan Peters becomes the famous serial killer Jeffey Dahmer. In 10 episodes, Dahmer’s atrocities are illuminated through the stories of his numerous victims.
Series highlights 2022: Sandman on Netflix

Sandman is Netflix’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s popular graphic novel series – an epic tale of mythology, folklore and fairy tales about the forces between life and death. The protagonist is the lord of dreams, Dream (Tom Sturridge), who, after more than 100 years of imprisonment, has to restore order to his dream kingdom.

Series highlights 2022: Shantaram on Apple TV+

Apple TV+ adapts Gregory David Roberts’ novel about an Australian bank robber who flees to India in the late 80s and plunges into the underworld of Mumbai. Shantaram stars as Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam. For almost 20 years Hollywood has been trying to film the epic story (Johnny Depp was the star at times) and the Shantaram series has been in production since 2019. After Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel, the third MCU series will switch genres again this year. In a 10-episode legal comedy format, we follow the adventures of Tatiana Maslany’s Jennifer Walters, who, like her cousin Bruce Banner, can transform into a powerful green being. With lots. Amazon Prime Video’s new fantasy thriller series adapts the novel The Power by Naomi Alderman. In it, young women suddenly develop the ability to emit electric shocks. The wait for Season 3 of The Witcher is getting long. But Netflix has made provisions, and for 2022 a prequel series is in the starting blocks that delves deep into the past and mythology of the continent. Set 1200 years before Geralt and Ciri’s adventures, Blood Origin explores the mysteries of the conjunction of the spheres and the origin of the first witcher. Series Highlights 2022: Tulsa King at Paramount+

The morbid and fantastic narrative worlds of Tim Burton and the Addams Family meet for the first time. Developed by Smallville creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough and directed by Burton, the horror fantasy series follows the adventures of Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) at Nevermore Academy. Did we mention Danny Elfman is composing the series music? Tim Burton fans should definitely make a note of Wednesday. And everyone else too.
