The Finnish athletics team for the World Championships has grown to 36 athletes on Thursday.
in Eugene, USA from the 15th to the 24th a pole vaulter joined the team for the July competitions Tommi Holttinena sprinter Anniina Korttemaa For 200 meters, pole vaulter Saga Andersson and a mortar thrower Suvi Koskinen.
– These are additional places that the International Association of Athletics Federations (WA) offered to Finland. Places became available even at this stage, when the target number of athletes for the sports was not met with the final registrations.
– Some countries had not notified the athletes’ absences to WA in accordance with the instructions on 26.6. by the end of the year, but left the athletes unannounced for the games since the beginning of the week, says the Finnish Sports Confederation’s (SUL) top sports coaching manager Tuomo Salonen.
– All four Finnish athletes accepted the place offered to them. The preparation time for the games is naturally a bit shorter for them, but the aim is to get all four to Oregon at the latest a few days before their first competition performance.
There are now 36 athletes in the Finnish team, i.e. the same number as in the World Championships in Stuttgart in 1993. There have been more athletes in the Finnish World Championships team only in the World Championships in Helsinki in 1983 and 2005.
