The 4 most likely ways Rick can still come back

The adventure of The Walking Dead began almost 12 years ago with Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln). Fans have celebrated and suffered with him and sometimes feared him a bit. That’s why they were so shaken when Rick sacrificed for his family and friends in the fifth episode of season 9 and blow up the bridge he’s standing on.

However, there was one ray of hope: Rick survived. In one of the last shots of the episode, we see him lying in a helicopter and being flown away by a group, the Civic Republic military. Since then, fans have been hoping that the former main character of the legendary zombie series could return for the last eight episodes before the grand finale.

and these hopes are not unfounded. Finally, pictures of Rick actor Andrew Lincoln appeared near the series filming location. And showrunner Angela Kang can understand the desire for a Rick cameo and speaks in an interview with Moviepilot about “a few things” that the series will surprise us with shortly before its end. But what could Rick Grimes return look like? We’ve given it some thought.

1st way Rick could appear in The Walking Dead season 11: in the final showdown

It all boils down to the final battle against the Commonwealth in Season 11. A final showdown that could claim some casualties and create new heroes. And thus the perfect timing for an epic cameo by Rick Grimeswho stands by his companions of many years for the last time.

One thing is for sure: the finale of The Walking Dead will be action-packed

Let’s put this in perspective: the battle is about to end. Countless bodies lie on the ground. Including Aaron, Rosita, Hund, Hershel Jr. and Carol. The rest are injured or disabled. Only Daryl stands and fights Lance Hornsby in an epic head-to-head. Just before Lance can perform the coup de grace on Daryl, his radio starts to hum: “Don’t mess with my Daryl!” Lance pauses and the fans go wild because they know that voice. It’s none other than the former leader of Alexandria, flying around the corner in a stolen CRM helicopter.

With him in the chopper are Michonne and Morgan. Together they defeat the remnants of the Commonwealth army. Sounds like fan fiction? It is. Would be something like that but definitely conceivable. Rick Grimes had one spectacular introduction in the very first episode of the series – it would only be fitting if the ending was similarly spectacular.

2nd way Rick could appear in The Walking Dead season 11: in an end credits scene

If we’ve learned anything from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s that the best way to advertise upcoming projects is through vague hints in an end credits scene. And with whom is a The Walking Dead movie planned right now? Rick Grimes.

So a teaser at the end of the series finale would be conceivable, in which one sees as Michonne finds a trail of Rick – or plans to free him from the clutches of the Civic Republic military. How Michonne and he fight back against the military would be an exciting storyline for one of the planned Rick projects. Another possibility would be that Rick Grimes is only shown from behind, for example in front of Alexandria. So more vague hints towards “He’s back!” as an actual story teaser.

Either would be less satisfying than a “proper” return, sure. But at least something.

Rick Grimes wasn’t always the shining hero of The Walking Dead

It would certainly break the hearts of fans, but an evil Mr. Grimes is quite realistic. After all, it’s been over seven years since his disappearance and the ex-sheriff has had several dark moments in previous seasons. During this time, his family and colleagues were able to remind him of his moral compass and guide him back on the right path.

He now lacks that support. Completely on his own, far away from his loved ones, Rick could finally switch to the dark side. And either worked his way up in CRM or joined another group, like the Saviors, for example.

Whether that would be a wise decision by the showrunners is debatable. However, it is a perfectly possible option.

4. Way Rick could appear in The Walking Dead Season 11: Not at all

While it would be a huge disappointment, it’s entirely possible that Rick Grimes won’t be in the main series again. With the upcoming spin-off series and movies, the franchise may well be saving its big moments for the future.

That means no reunion with Daryl, no final hug with Judith or RJ, and no reaction to Negan’s development and his status as a free man. The Walking Dead has been with us for well over a decade and still amazes millions. Actually, it’s inconceivable that the series won’t return to the man who started it all: Rick Grimes.
