The rhinos have traveled 160 km by truck from South Africa and the hope is to strengthen the local wildlife and economy, as Zinave now becomes the country’s only large game park where all five animal species – elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard – can be seen.
– The return of the rhino means that Zinave will be a new and exciting tourist destination in Mozambique, says Werner Myburgh, head of the organization that has led the project.
The wildlife in the park has slowly begun to recover, after being decimated due to poaching and the long civil war that raged in the country until 1992. Since 2015, 2,400 animals belonging to 14 different species have been introduced to the park.
