It’s been seven years since Fifty Shades of Gray hit cinemas Equal parts loathed and celebrated became. The insecure but attractive student Anastasia Steele meets the successful and attractive businessman Christian Grey, the two fall in love and have a lot of sex and even more relationship drama in the three films in the series.
The film was panned by critics, shutting down leads Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan international megastars. But whenever the two are asked about the erotic franchise, you get the impression that the actors themselves were not really happy with their roles. This is also the case in a recent interview.
Dakota Johnson thought Fifty Shades of Gray would be a very different movie
Dakota Johnson spoke to Vanity Fair about the Netflix project Persuasion, an adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel of the same name. But even in 2022, she doesn’t seem to be able to get around the topic of Fifty Shades of Gray – and wants to clarify a few things: “I signed for another film than what finally came out of it.”
It didn’t stop at one film. Check out the trailer for Fifty Shades of Gray 2 here:

One of the biggest problems with the shooting: The author of the novel and producer of the films, EL James.
She had a lot of creative control and just demanded certain things to happen. There are parts in the books that just don’t work in a movie, like the inner monologue [von Anastasia Steele]the part incredibly cheesy is. Saying it out loud just didn’t work. It was always a struggle. Fifty Shades of Gray became a nightmare behind the scenes too
Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam was originally slated to play Christian Grey. According to Johnson, when he finally decided to pull out of the project after all, the writer became angry and scrapped the adapted script by Up Close writer Patrick Marber. “I was afraid”said Johnson, who was only 23 at the time. “The situation just got crazy.”
The team tried to keep as much of the discarded script as possible, according to the actress, and rewrote dialogue at night. Sometimes more, sometimes less successful. Also against certain camera angles and sex scenes Dornan and Johnson had to fight. Still, Dakota Johnson has no regrets about being part of the Fifty Shades franchise:
If I had known at the time how this was going to develop, I don’t think anyone would have been involved. Everyone would have thought, ‘This is psychotic.’ […] It’s been great for our careers. So great. We were so lucky. But it was also strange. So, so weird. Not Just Persuasion with Dakota Johnson: The Best 20 Reboots of July 2022
