New images end confusion over return of dead figure

We’ll be able to rest easy this weekend because one of the biggest mysteries of Avatar 2: The Way of Water has finally been solved. At some point in the long wait for the Avatar sequel, we learned that Sigourney Weaver will be starring in the film. That’s right, Sigourney Weaver, actress of who doesn’t remember, researcher Dr. Grace Augustine. But she died in part 1. So does Avatar 2 bring back dead characters? After all, Stephen Lang is said to be back as the evil and actually dead Miles Quaritch.

No, all wrong.

Empire magazine just published a new image from Avatar 2, along with the character description of Sigourney Weaver’s character. dr Grace Augustine remains dead. Weaver plays an entirely new character. In fact Jake and Neytiri’s daughter in my teens, who would have thought? Played by Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, Jake and Neytiri are the main characters of the franchise. (Just yesterday we found out what role Kate Winslet will play in Avatar 2)

In fact, Weaver embodies a young Na’vi named Kiri. It’s an unusual decision, as both actress and director James Cameron are aware:

We’re going to have an actress in her 60s playing a character decades younger than her biological age. sig[ourney Weaver] has great fun with it.
