France has passed the milestone of one million public or private charging points for electric vehiclesaccording to estimates released Wednesday by Enedisthe operator of the electricity distribution network.
Enedis, which connects these infrastructures to the network on public roads and in the private domain, notes the “dynamic” in progress, with the milestone of one million charging points crossed in the second quarter of 2022: i.e. +61% compared to the same period of 2021, and nearly double compared to December 2020. A charging point is different from a charging point which can accommodate multiple points. More than half of charging points are now found in private homes, 43% in companies, and the rest (6%) is accessible to the public on the roads, car parks, etc. According to the last barometer carried out by Avere-France and the Ministry of Ecological Transition, as of May 31, 2022, France had 62,139 charging points open to the public (+51% over one year).
Unequal distribution in France
They are also distributed unevenly in France, depending on the population and the equipment policies of the territories, notes Enedis. Thus the most densely equipped areas in absolute value are Ile-de-France, the Mediterranean basin, the North and the Gironde. But the balance sheet is more homogeneous if we take into account the population density (the number of charging points per 100,000 inhabitants).
More than 900,000 electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids are in circulation, there should be 17 million in 2035. Some 89% of users do their main charging at home, indicated an Enedis/BVA survey in 2021. While nearly half of French people live in collective residences, around 2% of condominiums are now equipped with charging infrastructure.
