The decision was made on Tuesday, at the same time as a new wave of covidfalls seems to be sweeping across the continent with new, more contagious, sub-variants of the omicron virus version. However, the new variants are not believed to cause more serious illness than the older, relatively mild omicron variants.
The certificate was introduced in July last year, with the aim of facilitating travel between EU countries during the corona pandemic. The document shows whether the holder has been vaccinated, recently recovered from a covid infection or tested negative for the virus.
Almost two billion certificates have been issued.
