Researchers have discovered what they believe is the world’s largest bacterium and it challenges prevailing theories about bacteria. Bacteria can usually only be seen under a microscope, but this giant is a full centimeter long and can therefore be seen with the naked eye. To really understand how huge it is in the bacterial world, the researchers compare it to a normal tall man would hit a man as tall as the world’s highest mountain, Mount Everest. The bacterium has been found on sunken leaves in the mangrove swamps in the Caribbean. The discovery has been published in the scientific journal Science.
