In a written statement from the organization, it was reported that the WHO emergency committee will convey its recommendations for the evaluation of the monkeypox epidemic in the International Public Health Emergency (PHEIC) category to the WHO management in the coming days.
SEEN IN 48 COUNTRIES
Speaking to the press after the meeting, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that more than 3,200 cases have been detected in 48 countries, including African countries where the virus is endemic, and that since the beginning of 2022, around 70 deaths have occurred in Central Africa due to the virus.
Ghebreyesus underlined that most of the monkeypox cases in Nigeria are women, noting that the virus is not only transmitted among men.
‘IT IS CRITICAL TO KNOW HOW IT SPREADS’
Reminding that monkeypox was seen for the first time in many non-endemic countries, Ghebreyesus said, “It is critical to fully learn how this disease spreads.” made its assessment.
The WHO emergency committee will meet again in the coming days to assess the danger of monkeypox.
