The world is crying out for Ukrainian wheat, which has saturated stomachs around the world for millennia and usually accounts for ten percent of global exports. But when Russia now occupies, or blocks, all ends up in Ukraine, “the earth’s own gold” is likely to remain in the country. “I appeal to the international community to help Ukraine open its ports so that Ukraine can sell its grain and give the world food – and peace,” said farmer Valeryi Kotenko. “Stop Putin and his ilk” But in Ukraine there is not only wheat, but also corn, barley, oats and sunflower products that are needed all over the world. “Here in Ukraine, people who defend our borders die and abroad a person dies of starvation every 48 seconds,” says Alla Stoianova, head of the Ministry of Agriculture in Odessa. For peasants in Ukraine, everyday life now consists of avoiding mines and unexploded ordnance.
