Viktor Fasth ended his career a year ago.
Now the profile is back in the SHL – but not as a player, but in a completely new role.
Viktor Fasth has been one of Sweden’s best hockey goalkeepers for the past ten years. His huge 2011/12 season at AIK resulted in an NHL contract with Anaheim, and the 39-year-old has over 50 games in the world’s best hockey league on the merit list.
Gets a new role in the top team
The goalkeeper also had time for a turn in Edmonton, and a couple of seasons in the KHL, before returning to Sweden in 2017/18. Then he signed for Växjö Lakers and won the SHL twice.
It has been a little over a year since Viktor Fasth announced that he was ending his career. But the longing to return to hockey has been great, and now he is ready for a return to his old club Växjö – but not as a player.
– Viktor will be part of our organization this year. I do not know if it is a new position, but it is new to us and I hope that he will be a bit between players and leaders as a ballpark and mentor, says Lakers sports manager Henrik Evertsson to Hockeynews.
“It’s going to be damn fun”
Evertsson is developing the new role Växjö has opened in the club, and who believes that Viktor Fasth will fit like a glove for the assignment.
– You work individually in a mentorship, but also with concrete details in the game. If you have been in goal, you have the good fortune that you have a lot to contribute because you have just been a goalkeeper. You have played behind the slopes. You may know better than anyone else how a goalkeeper wants it and how a defensive game works, says Evertsson.
He adds:
– He is someone you listen to when he talks. A cruel person who in any case I think is ruggedly fun to talk to once you do. And I think most others think so too. So it’s going to be a hell of a lot of fun to be with Viktor.
