Babylon Berlin Season 3 ends on an apocalyptic note. A lot will change for Gereon Rath (Volker Bruch) and Charlotte Ritter (Liv Lisa Fries) while the Weimar Republic falls into crisis.

We hobby detectives at home are all the more excited to see the continuation of the elaborate historical crime series. Babylon Berlin won’t run forever – but it will Season 4 is definitely coming. What is known about these new episodes, when they start and which book provides the template, you can read in the following article. before Season 3 spoilers be warned.

    • When is Babylon Berlin season 4 coming?

    There is no official start date, but the fourth season has already been shot. In a press release called Sky Babylon Berlin IV as one of 60 own productions that 2022 is published. So we will probably see the new episodes later this year.

    Babylon Berlin: is there a trailer for season 4?

    We still have to do without a trailer for the new season. However, the end of shooting was announced on September 17, 2021 and with it that first picture from season 4 of Babylon Berlin released:

    Babylon Berlin Season 4

    Additionally, actor Mark Ivanir (Barry, Homeland), who plays American gangster and assassin Goldstein, shared a picture from filming in Cologne that presumably shows him in a Babylon Berlin costume:

    Great Time Warp: What is Known About the Plot

    Like the previous 3 seasons of the series, the 4th season is based on a template by Volker Kutscher. This time will Kutscher’s novel Goldstein adapted. This means we have a time leap ahead of us. (Read Goldstein now*)

    The most recent season finale ended after the death of Foreign Minister Gustav Stresemann and the Stock market crash in October 1929. Season 4 will skip two years. So much is known:

  • According to a press release from the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW in February 2021, Season 4 is turning “The political and social situation in Berlin from New Year’s Eve 1930/31 until the Stennes Putsch in April of that year.”
  • At the Stennes coup is a conflict within the National Socialist Party. This led to the occupation of the NSDAP party building in Berlin by SA men.
  • The Weimar Republic was shattered by the economic crisis. The banking crisis escalates, the currency system collapses and unemployment rises.
  • Against this background, Gereon Rath is commissioned in the novel to shadowing Jewish gangsterswho traveled to Germany from the USA.

    • How closely the authors stick to the template remains questionable, as always. In season 3, for example, key elements of the finale were changed. In the Sky press release, the Storyline of Babylon Berlin season 4 at least as described:

    While Gereon Rath investigates a murder surrounding a Nazi demonstration, Charlotte Ritter tries to protect a loved one from a police investigation. She has no idea what she is putting at risk…

    The Cast: Who is Starring in Babylon Berlin Season 4?

    Leading actor Volker Bruch attracted negative attention last year for his support of conspiracy ideologues, as reported by the Tagesspiegel. In an Instagram post that was later deleted, he thanked those involved in an anti-vaccination demo in Vienna, which also included right-wing extremists. So far, the production companies have not distanced themselves and so Bruch will also be seen as Gereon Rath in Babylon Berlin IV.

    Apart from well-known faces like Liv Lisa Fries, Benno Fürmann, Lars Eidinger and Hannah Herzsprung, new stars await us in the cast of season 4. In addition to Mark Ivanier, these include Barbara Philipp, Moisej Bazijan, Ronald Kukulies and Max Raabe.

    When does Babylon Berlin end?

    There are eight novels about Gereon Rath in total, but will there be as many seasons? Judging from the creators, the answer is “no”. The most recent novel uses the Olympic Games in 1936 as a framework, but the series is not supposed to penetrate that far into the rule of the NSDAP and Adolf Hitler. Author-director Achim von Borries explained to the DPA (via SZ):

    If there is a final seasonit would be the first months after the so-called seizure of power before the Reichstag fire.

    Babylon Berlin and Gereon Rath’s serial investigations would thus reach their end point sometime in 1933.

    But now season 4 is coming up. This time the screenplays were written by Achim von Borries, Bettine von Borries, Henk Handloegten, Khyana El Bitar and Tom Tykwer. As always, the trio Tykwer, Borries and Handloegten are directing.
