Revealed to the whole world a few weeks ago through a first video teaser, Avalonia L’Etrange Voyage (Strange World for its name in VO) was present at the Annecy Festival. For the first time since 2019, the Walt Disney Animation Studios teams traveled to France to show 10 minutes of their new feature film as a world exclusive. Produced by Roy Conli (The New Heroes, Rapunzel), Avalonia will tell us about the adventures of the Clades, a family of explorers, who will find themselves on a planet like no other, populated by fantastic creatures. During the Annecy Festival, Disney took the opportunity to reveal the original voices of the film, with a 3-star cast.

· Jake Gyllenhaal (the Searcher Clade farmer who finds himself propelled into this adventure in an unknown world)

Dennis Quaid (his father, Jaeger, a larger than life character)

Jaboukie Young-White (Ethan, 16, his son, who longs to discover new horizons and respond to the impulses of his heart)

Gabrielle Union (his wife Meridian, Ethan’s mother, skilled pilot and natural leader)

· Lucy Liu (Callisto Mal, the leader of the expedition within this strange universe).

If the release date of Avalonia is not yet known, a small controversy surrounds the film, in particular on the distribution of the film in France. Indeed, if the 61st animated film from Disney will be released in cinemas all over the world, in France, it will only be offered in streaming on Disney+. A cultural exception due to the chronology of the media which disrupts the smooth running of things within the major American film companies. A Disney spokesperson spoke about it. in the columns of Deadlineexplaining that France does not play the card of new ways of consuming spectators:

We believe that the media chronology is not adapted to the consumer, nor does it establish a balanced or proportionate framework between the various players in the French audiovisual ecosystem. This is all the more frustrating as we have increased our investments in the creation of original French content while supporting French cinema through our theatrical releases.

It is true that in the absence of this media chronology (which is a French cultural exceptin, as we recall), films can now be released between 30 and 45 days later on streaming platforms. This is the case at Disney, but also at Warner Bros and other cinema players. It remains to be seen how much longer France will manage to keep its exceptional details…
