In the desert, the Tuareg quench their thirst with hot tea. However, drinking hot when it is hot is not necessarily an example to follow.
Human beings are animals homeotherms. They are able to regulate their temperature internal to maintain it at a more or less constant level. But this does not come without the expense ofenergy.
Drinking hot makes you sweat
Thus, in the middle of summer, if you drink very hot, the body temperature increases a little more. To return to its favorite 37°C, our body will then start to sweat. Accelerate the process of sweating, it’s good when it’s hot. It helps to lower the body temperature. But, sweating too much is also risking dehydration.
Drinking cold brings freshness
When the Sun burns, if you drink too much cold, you instantly enjoy a feeling of freshness that is sometimes welcome. But of fake news are then sent to our internal thermosensors. The sweating is slowed down, or even stopped, just like the elimination of heat stored in our body.
The solution: drink lukewarm
Finally, the further the temperature of a drink is from our body temperature, the more we will have to provideenergy to bring our internal temperature back to around 37°C. The ideal, when it is hot, would therefore not be drink hot but to drink lukewarm drinks, between 12 and 14°C, which allow both to quench your thirst and tohydrate our body effectively.
