Schools have been turned into evacuation shelters in the areas affected by floods during the past week’s storm that has left millions of people homeless in Bangladesh. At least 25 people have died in the downpour, which mainly affected the northeastern parts of the country. Several of the dead are children.
The summer months are rainy season in Bangladesh and neighboring India. The rain is expected to continue into next week, the country’s meteorologists state.
The military has been called in to help those in need.
– The floods worsened on Saturday morning after a temporary relief the previous day, says Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain at the authorities in the hard-hit region of Sylhet.
The whole region is without electricity and large parts of the infrastructure are completely shut down.
– The situation is bad. More than four million people have been stranded by floodwaters, he says.
As recently as the end of May, Bangladesh was hit by a deadly flood, which was said to be the worst in the country in over 20 years. Indian meteorologists also warn of heavy rainfall in the coming week, reports Indian Express.
