The European Court of Justice (ECHR)’s decision to stop the so-called Rwandan flights was political, claims the British Home Secretary Priti Patel.
– How and why did they make that decision? Was it politically motivated? I am of the opinion that it is, absolutely, she says in an interview with The Daily Telegraph.
– The opaque way in which this court has acted is completely scandalous. It must be questioned, she continues.
Patel believes, among other things, that the government was not allowed to take part in the judges’ identities and questions the fact that the court has never used a similar decision before.
On Wednesday, Patel said that Britain’s plans to move asylum seekers to Rwanda have not changed, only been postponed.
A first flight in the controversial co-operation between Britain and Rwanda would, after several rounds, have taken off on Tuesday. But just before the flight was to take off, the European Court put its foot down, and the flight remained on the ground.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the controversial settlement with Rwanda in April.
