The EU will take legal action against the United Kingdom after presenting a bill to amend the Northern Ireland Protocol.
According to the Northern Ireland Protocol, trade between the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland must be controlled, so that goods cannot flow freely into and out of the EU across the border between Northern Ireland and Ireland.
The European Commission is now accusing Britain of threatening peace in Northern Ireland.
– There is no legal or political justification for unilaterally amending an international agreement, says Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic, reports the news agency AFP.
If the British bill passes, it would override the exit agreement with the EU. Following the presentation of the British proposal in Parliament earlier this week, Maros Sefcovic warned of legal action.
“We note with great concern the British Government’s decision to put a bill on the table,” he said on Monday evening.
According to Sefcovic, it is not relevant for the EU to renegotiate the Brexit agreement.
