Otto Leskinen was recruited to Frölunda as a star defender.
Now he leaves – without having made a single match.
– The work of looking for a new defender has begun, says sports director Fredrik Sjöström.
Frölunda had a good season and it was not far from going all the way to the Swedish Championship final. However, it was difficult to break up Luleå’s strong defensive line, and they had to settle for a semi-final place, but next year they will of course invest in even more.
Prestigious
Frölunda has had a decent turnover within the player squad, but a signing that they have been very pleased with has been the Finn Otto Leskinen. He signed for the club in mid-May, and on the pitch it sounded like they had found the last piece of the puzzle in the squad.
Frölunda has lacked an offensive top defender, and in Leskinen it was thought that he had been found.
– A driven back and good skater with strengths in the offensive game, said Frölunda’s sports manager Fredrik Sjöström, that is, just under a month ago.
Leaving immediately
But now comes the big nightmare message for the club. Only 27 days after Leskinen was presented by Frölunda, the message comes that he is leaving. The Finn has chalked out a one-year contract with the NHL club Montreal Canadiens.
This means that he leaves Frölunda without having made a single match for the club. It also means that Frölunda is now faced with a tough task of finding a new top defender.
