Less known than fans and air conditioners, is the air cooler a good solution to withstand the heat and temperature rises of summer? To find out, you still need to know which one is best suited to your interior… First of all, what is the difference with a simple fan or with an air conditioner? The air cooler is in theory more efficient than a fan which only stirs the (warm) air in the room. It is also more ecological and economical than a air conditionersince it is less expensive and consumes less electrical energy (less than 100 watts).
The air cooler actually works with an evaporative system. The hot air is sucked in by the device and passes through a filter, humidified by the presence of water in a dedicated tank. Then the device’s blower causes the water to evaporate, so that the air coming out is colder and more humid than the incoming air. Thanks to this device, an air cooler saves about 10 degrees compared to the outside air depending on the model.
On average, air coolers are suitable for rooms of 20 to 30 m² and have a battery life of 10 to 30 hours. Be careful, if the air is saturated with humidity, its functioning can be disturbed. In this case, the rooms must be well ventilated to renew the air therein. Similarly, in case of strong heat, it will not be able to refresh the air but it will still offer the feeling of better supporting this heat.
The models
Most air coolers are mobile (on wheels). They can therefore easily be moved from one room to another; knowing all the same that they are not suitable for damp rooms. Some models have additional functions: fan, air purifier, humidifier of air. They can also be equipped with a remote control.
Selection criteria
Tank capacity and area to be cooled : before buying an air freshener, it is necessary to evaluate the surface of the room or rooms where it will be used. The larger it is, the larger the tank capacity of the device will have to be. This capacity will also determine the autonomy of the air cooler.
The air flow in m3/h : the greater the airflow, the more efficient the cooling of the air. Functions: if you want to use it to ventilate a room or purify the air, opt for a multifunction model.
The noise : be careful, some models can be noisy. Better take this into account if you plan to use it in a bedroom.
