ABSTENTION. The abstention rate for this first round of the presidential election is 52.49%. A historical record.
[Mis à jour le 13 juin 2022 à 09h41] The abstention rate for this first round of legislative elections is 52.49% according to official data from the Ministry of the Interior ! A record for a first round of legislative elections. Voters clearly shunned the ballot boxes on this Sunday, June 12, 2022. In the wake of Emmanuel Macron’s election, more than one in two voters abstained in the second round, a record with 57.4% of abstention in the wake of an already unattractive first round for many voters with an abstention rate of more than 51%.
Abstention undoubtedly had a strong impact on this first round of legislative elections due to the very nature of this ballot and its qualification rules for the second round. In the legislative elections, candidates must reach 12.5% of registered voters (and not of the votes cast) to qualify for the second round. In the second round in 2017, abstention had already broken records with 56.83% abstention recorded, which marked the highest score in legislative or presidential elections since 1958 and the beginning of the Fifth Republic.
