Perched 140 meters high and overlooking the Dordogne river, the La Roque-Gageac troglodyte fort is a 12th century fortress which has the particularity of having been built on the rock itself and accessible after climbing a staircase on the side of the cliff. Equipped with a very elaborate defensive system still visible, the fort constituted an exceptional refuge in the event of an attack.
