Ambassador Csaba Körösi, who works as the Environmental Sustainability Director of the Hungarian Presidential Office, was elected as the President of the 77th General Assembly of the United Nations.
Körösi will take over the 77th Presidency of the 193-member UN General Assembly from Abulla Shahid, the President of the 76th General Assembly, before the general assembly works to be held in September. Körösi’s presidency will last for one year.
Veteran Hungarian diplomat Körösi served in different positions during his 40-year diplomatic career, including Hungary’s Permanent Representation to the UN between 2010-2014.
“We must find a common solution for the world facing challenges”
Körösi gave a speech of thanks at the podium where he came with applause. Körösi briefed the members of the general assembly about the work he would do during his term and his agenda. Körösi, who was elected as the 77th UN General Assembly Presidency, emphasized that during his term, solidarity, sustainability, science, will guide the agenda of the new General Assembly President, and stressed that the world is facing many challenges along with food and energy shortages, debt, climate change, loss of biodiversity.
Körösi underlined that the world must jointly find solutions to solve the challenges, and that the world may face unprecedented instability in the coming years due to the war in Ukraine and armed conflicts in other countries. Körösi said, “We need to find integrated solutions to these challenges. There is no going back to normal anymore. We must do much better in fulfilling our goals and commitments that we have jointly determined. We live in times that have shaken the foundations on which this organization was founded. With multiple crises approaching, we must also maintain the credibility of the UN. “We need the same determination today to face the challenges that threaten international peace and security as well as our sustainable future on this planet.”
In his speech, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres congratulated the newly elected Körösi and expressed his satisfaction with his election. He emphasized that the 77th President of the UN General Assembly, who will take over the post in September, will assume a critical role in a world in danger.
Referring to Körösi’s diplomatic background, the current Chairman of the General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid, stated that his experiences will contribute greatly to the UN during his presidency and that he is ready to fully support him.
